Nestled on the corner of Devonshire and Holt Street in Surry Hills, outnumbered by cafe's serving up iced soy latte's, Mama's Buoi provides a fun change from the usual whirr of coffee grinders and cronuts served by the dozen.
The ethos behind "Mama's buoi" (Mama's Boy) is sharing meals made by mama; full of flavour and made with love. The shrimp cakes were light, crispy and topped off with a sauce so good you'd want to bathe in it. The dumplings were impressive by any means- soft tofu packages bursting with flavour, and finished with a silky skin. Definitely a winner.
By the time the mains began arriving, Helen and I were both second guessing the holding capacity of our 2 seater table. As good as the choice seemed upon arrival, the novelty of precariously balancing plates on top of one another quickly wore off, and with my clumsiness keeping us on verge of disaster we quickly reassigned to one of the larger communal style tables (shoutout to family style dining!) Amongst the main spread was wagyu beef salad, a bit of hands on fun with DIY rice paper rolls, traditional stirfried mushroom and snowpeas and the real winner which was a saigon influenced duck and sweet potato curry. The coconut tamarind curry base was so, so good- definitely worth a try!
